Business Analyst Intern
We're looking for a business analyst intern to join our team this summer as we launch a brand new home services company. You'll play a critical role in key business discussions and gain experience that positions you for a business analyst role after graduation.

HomeX aspires to help homeowners take better care of their homes, with less hassle and at lower cost. We're doing this by acquiring traditional HVAC and plumbing contractors, offering direct-to-consumer home maintenance and protection plans (e.g. if something breaks down due to normal wear and tear, we'll fix it at no extra cost to the homeowner), providing local concierge services, and wrapping the whole thing in a digitally native, mobile-first platform. We're differentiated by our high touch + high tech approach and by fully owning the value chain, from direct-to-consumer sales to in-home service delivery.
Why is this an interesting opportunity? The industry sounds really un-sexy, I know. But the complexity of the problem is really intellectually compelling, and the opportunity is massive. Home Services is a $400bn market in the US (yes, billion!), but there are 485,000+ tiny companies in the home maintenances sub-sector alone. The existing companies aren't sophisticated operators, are really low tech, and often fail to provide great service to their customers. Additionally, homes are incredibly complex, so how do you actually build a smart product that helps uneducated homeowners take better care of them?
What you'll be doing: This summer, we'll be acquiring our first major service provider (deal closes 6/30) and preparing to launch Home Advocate, the home maintenance and protection plan business. You will be the primary business analyst on the Home Advocate side, helping us think through every aspect of the business and conducting key research to support your POVs. Questions we're tackling include everything from the core business model and strategy to key metrics and financial controls; from what systems and infrastructure we need to run the business to how we want to engage consumers to what the consumer experience looks and feels like (brand, tech, etc.). What's included in our subscription plans, and what's the right product mix? How do we want to go to market, and what sales team / capabilities do we need? How do we want to manage our customers and fulfill their service requests?
Basically, there's a LOT to figure out, and we're looking to add some extra horsepower to the team to get it done. You'll be working directly with Stephanie Werner, Stanford BA '11 and MBA '16, the co-founder and chief strategy officer, in San Jose. You'll also be working indirectly with Michael Werner, Stanford BA & MS '82, an experienced entrepreneur and CEO who's spent 30 years in the Home Services industry; a Silicon Valley tech exec from a well known company; our CFO and other seasoned executives.
We would expect you to be on-site for a minimum of 2 half-days per week in San Jose and to work remotely an additional 15-20 hours per week.

What we're looking for: Experience doesn't matter. We're looking for someone smart, diligent, and organized. Most importantly, you must be able to articulate and defend well-researched arguments / theses for our critical business questions. We'll coach you through the first few, but we're looking for someone who can fearlessly engage in key business discussions and who brings well reasoned opinions to our debates.
